Literacy and Modern Languages
Literacy and Modern Languages We build on the language experience and skills which children bring to school in the areas of listening, talking, reading and writing, developing each of them to allow each individual to engage fully in society and learning. Our pupils explore different forms of language using a range of texts, which society values and finds useful e.g. novels and stories, spoken word, charts and diagrams, newspapers, emails, web pages.
As the progress through school our pupils encounter texts of increasing complexity. A progressive, structured reading programme, The Oxford Reading Tree is used throughout the Primary with the addition of novels, Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar in the Infants.
All classes use strategies from the “Big Writing” initiative to help improve performance and attainment in the many genres of writing. Pupils in P3-7 have regular timetabled library visits, where they can update their “accelerated reader” book.
Whilst pupils in P1-P3 take part in an initiative called CAPER (Children and Parents Enjoy Reading) which follows on from the Nursery. The languages, dialects and literature of Scotland are explored through topic work in Social Studies and national events such as Burns and St. Andrew’s Day.
Pupils from P1-P7 experience French on an ongoing basis.
P6/7 make regular visits to our secondary modern languages department.
