Moffat's Got Talent

P7 Graduation

P1/2 Assembly

P1/2 have had an amazing year learning and working together as a team. Their end of year assembly reflected this theme with a retelling of the story “Farmer Duck”. The children performed with confidence and courage and showed the audience what a talented, creative, team of learners they are.

Well done P1/2.

P7/S1 Transition Week

P7 pupils joined us in Secondary for a full week of transition activities. These included two days at Loch Ken for team building activities in their new classes, followed by three days of following their new S1 timetables. It has been great to meet them all and start to get to know everyone a little better. We are super proud of all of them for giving their all, and we are really looking forward to them starting with us full time in August!

P2/3 Assembly

P2/3 has been learning all about Space. To finish their topic, they presented an exciting assembly today. They did a fantastic job and there certainly is “no place like space!”

Her design will be on all of the November Read Write and Count bags all over Scotland, an amazing achievement! Penny loved her prize (art materials) and her recent photoshoot. Well done Penny 🤩🌟🎊🎉
Our pupils always love receiving their Bookbug bags and Read Write and Count bags every year, a huge thank you to the #ScottishBookTrust for providing these all over Scotland.

Glasgow Science Centre

P3/4 and P4/5 enjoyed a brilliant visit to Glasgow Science Centre on Monday 19th June. With three levels full of interactive exhibits, they learned all about the body, the world of visual illusions and how light and sound travel through different materials. An incredible IMAX showing of "Our Beautiful Planet" completed this wonderful excursion.

Fairtrade

Moffat Academy has renewed their "FairAchiever" Award for another year. A huge well done to Miss Leanne Henderson who has worked extremely hard co-ordinating the project alongside our young people. Here are some of the highlights from the feedback received.

Evidence

You have provided compelling evidence showing that Fairtrade is truly embedded in the school curriculum and ethos.

It is great to see how well you have embedded learning throughout the school in a variety of topics and age groups. It's particularly great that the curriculum is focusing on the deeper issues relating to Fairtrade and the ideas of global inequality, fairness and trade imbalances. Well done!
Policy Feedback

This is an excellent policy - it is clear to see that you have considered each of the requirements of the FairAchiever award and worked hard to incorporate this into your policy. It really shows how committed you are to raising awareness for Fairtrade at Moffat Academy.

It’s excellent to see that your policy is supported by pupils as well as the head teacher and parent council, the bigger support, the bigger the success!

Endangered Shopping Aisle and Poster Competition

What can I say? This is an utterly amazing challenge, it's relevant, creative, well thought through, well organised, and has maximum impact and reach. It's fantastic that you got good media coverage to showcase the amazing Fairtrade work you do.

Overall Feedback

Moffat Academy lives and breathes Fairtrade, the evidence you have provided is compelling. It is clear that a lot of thought and work has gone into doing this, thank you!

Our Fairtrade Fortnight activities are also featured in the “Fairtrade in Dumfries and Galloway" Newsletter, linked below.

Primary Health Week

Granny Mave Birthday Cards

On Wednesday 24th May, Granny Mave, who is currently cycling a 1000 mile journey around Scotland for Macmillan Cancer Support Scotland, took her overnight stop in Moffat.

Mr Gallacher, the Primary House Captains and the nursery went along to help cheer Mave's arrival at 2pm, video to follow!

It also happened to be Mavis' 85th birthday so our young people from Moffat Primary and Beattock Primary School made some cards and presented them to Mave last night at her surprise birthday buffet at Moffat Town Hall. She was over the moon with all the amazing designs and supportive words in them. Well done Granny Mave, you are an inspiration to all! 🚴‍♀️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thank you to Anne Garrett for inviting us and to Cora, Ava, Isla, Olly and Finn who kindly came along to help present Mave's cards.

A report by ITV Border news will be on tonight at 6pm.

UNCRC Article 13 (freedom of expression)

Every child must be free to express their thoughts and opinions and to access all kinds of information.

Whilst at Granny Mave’s Birthday celebration we met Tom Hanley, the Secretary, CTC Dumfries and Galloway Local Members' Group. Tom was part of the support group helping Granny Mave through Dumfries & Galloway. He had two jobs; driving the support van and then leading the group from Moffat to Castle Douglas. Tom has emailed us this message that he’d like to share:

‘A really wonderful moment in Moffat - I was carrying a newspaper clipping from 1994 - taken outside Moffat Hall with Mavis (and guess who?), PLUS Steve Ovett PLUS 3 teenage Pipers(official welcome) for Mavis' original round Scotland Fund-Raiser.(1110 miles)

On Wednesday, Mavis' Birthday party, I was introduced, not only to one of the original, teenage-Pipers, but her two daughters, who were there to present Birthday cards, made by pupils in their Primary School - and what a surprise the girls got when they saw their teenage Mum in the photo! A wonderful, inspiring link between the generations!’

It was lovely to meet you Tom! Granny Mave has now completed her cycle around Scotland but you can still donate here:
