UKMT Enterprising Maths Challenge

On Wednesday 4th October, a team of S3 and S4 students represented Moffat Academy at the Dumfries and Galloway heat of the UKMT Enterprising Maths Challenge. This year's contest was hosted by St. Joseph's College, who had set competitors a whole host of mind-boggling Maths tasks including an engineering origami challenge to see who could build the highest tower of Columbus Cubes; a series of hands-on spatial puzzles; and a lateral-thinking Maths relay race. Our problem-solving mathematicians, Isla Weatherstone (S3), Briony Bullard (S3), Nicholas Quigley (S4) and Harry Graham (S4), did us very proud.

Corehead

On Friday 29th September S2 young people visited Corehead to undertake a series of workshops, thanks to Borders Forest Trust.
Our young people were taken on a guided walk, undertook an art project and planted wild flowers in the meadow. Border Forest Trust staff shared their expertise with our young people on the history of the area as well as discussing things like biodiversity and conservation. The art project was well received with young people making their own brushes from natural materials before painting in the orchard. It was amazing to see a picture of the orchard 12 years ago as sparse land, before our young people then, planted the trees we were now picking apples from and painting.

SPORTSCOTLAND YOUNG AMBASSADORS CONFERENCE 2023

Two young people from every secondary school yesterday had the opportunity to attend the Young Sportscotland Ambassadors Conference at the home of Scottish Football, Hampden Park, Glasgow.

Each year two pupils from every secondary school in Scotland have the opportunity to be selected as Young Ambassadors to promote sport and motivate and inspire other young people to get involved in sport in their schools, clubs and local communities or to be more physically active.

Pictured from Moffat Academy are Gemma and Riley and also Hannah and Ryan from Langholm Academy who also had the opportunity to meet Scottish World Boxing Champion Hannah Rankin who had her World Championship belt with her.

The Young Ambassadors programme is organised by Sportscotland and is funded by the National Lottery. It is a key element of Sportscotland’s contribution to developing young people as leaders in sport. They believe that young people make a meaningful and important contribution as leaders in sport, and that young people should have access to a range of opportunities of leadership roles which reflect their interests and abilities.

The Mercians Concert

On Monday 11th September, Moffat Academy welcomed 'The Mercians' to perform for P1-S6 students. A young indie band, they are touring British schools to promote key messages around mental health, diversity and sexism (as well as many others to help promote inclusivity and respect). Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, from hearing the band's own songs to dancing along to some cover songs, the performance was a wonderful way to start off the week. Thank you to the band for coming in and delivering such a powerful message from all at Moffat Academy!

See all the amazing photos taken by S5 pupil Rhuridh Montgomerie in following album and thank you to Mrs Hume for some videos of the event too.

S3 House Designs

S3 Graphic Communication class with Mr Spellacy have started their dream house project. The class have been researching house styles and locations. Armed with this knowledge, everyone has produced at fantastic set of initial design ideas for their house. This project really stretches the class, once they chose a final idea then hand technical drawings are created including a perspective view. They then move onto 3D computer modelling and model the houses adding appearances and making them look as realistic as possible. Final stage is to produce a full colour sales brochure with room layouts and rendered photo realistic views. Well done S3, some of the best work I've see so far.
