Moffat Academy Whole School News 2024/25 - Term 1
Moffat Academy Pipe Band Workshop
Moffat Academy pipe band players attended the monthly workshop at NWCC in Dumfries in preparation for the annual Scottish Schools Championships competition in March. It was great to see many of our young players from Primary in the morning session as those who are progressing into the SWSPDA band.
All those who are part of the SWSPDA piping and drumming lessons in school are encouraged to attend the monthly workshops in Dumfries to play alongside their peers. It is a fantastic opportunity.
If you need more information about timings please let us know.

Rights Respecting Group News
The Rights Respecting Schools Pupil Group have been working on developing a whole school charter based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The pupil groups from both Moffat Primary and Secondary worked together to whittle down the 54 rights outlined by the UNCRC to 9 they felt were most relevant to school life. Following a whole school vote, the rights below will be included in our school charter. Over the coming months the pupil group will focus on these rights and promoting them throughout the school.
Article of the month for October:
Article 16 - Every child has the right to privacy. The law should protect the child’s private, family and home life, including protecting children from unlawful attacks that harm their reputation.
The pupils have created some questions to get everyone thinking about the right to privacy.
Community Open Evening
On Monday 9th September we invited Community Partners including Local Businesses, Sole Traders and Voluntary Organisations, to join us at our third annual Community Open Evening at Moffat Academy to share their work or sell their products.
The aim of the event was to welcome all our parents, carers, partners, and local community into our school building to understand more about our work, have an opportunity to see our wonderful facilities and a chance to connect with others. Thank you to all those who came along to support our event.
Scholastic Book Fair
We held our Cluster Scholastic Book Fair in term 1 which was a great success. We have raised in the region of £1114 in rewards to spend on Scholastic books and resources which is absolutely amazing! A massive thank you to all parents, carers and pupils who supported the event, and thank you to all of our pupil helpers and photographers.

Our Culture celebration board will be updated termly to showcase some of the fantastic languages spoken in our community. Next time you are in school, feel free to see what the phrase is, then scan the QR code to have one of our great contributors share it with you in their language.
If you would like to contribute to the board please don't hesitate to contact the school.
On Friday 27th September, Secondaryalso celebrated the European Day of Languages in Secondary. A variety of different events took place throughout the day. In the morning, Jordan Ferguson delivered a samba percussion workshop to several S1-S3 classes and in the afternoon, pupils enjoyed taking part in a foreign language music quiz and getting dressed up for the European Day of Languages photo booth. S1-S3 pupils also created bunting displaying the word 'welcome' in a variety of different languages. This was displayed at the front door for pupils, staff and visitors to enjoy. Secondary teachers also displayed a sign on each of their doors, stating their connections to foreign languages and countries. The Higher and National 5 French classes also spent the afternoon in the Primary school, reading 'The Gruffalo' in French and teaching pupils some French songs. A great time was had by all!

A Swinging Success!
On Friday 20th September, Moffat Academy and parents of young people who attend piping and drumming lessons held a fundraiser to support their tutors in school. The South West of Scotland Piping and Drumming Academy are a charity that rely on funding support and fundraising to continue to work with young people across D&G and we were over the moon to raise an amazing £1114.34 from our event. The Moffat young people and their families held a Community Ceilidh, which was extremely well supported by both the community and local businesses. It was a multi generational event which made it quite special. It was a delight to watch the little one's dancing from Nursery, with Primary & Secondary students as well as families, grandparents and family friends etc. The dance floor was packed from start to finish thanks to the wonderful tunes from Ali Buckets Ceilidh Band, which featured one of the SWSPDA drumming tutors Darren Brown.
The fledgling Moffat Academy Pipe Band performed in the interval, to a rapturous applause and this growing pipe band are delighted with the progress they are making together, as a result of the support from the SWSPDA.
Feedback was that the event was a roaring success and one which will hopefully be repeated again in the future. A huge thank you to all who made the night a huge success.

Moffat Golden Eagle Festival
Well done to Head Prefect Hannah Salmon and Depute Prefect Eleanor Gilby for speaking at the Moffat Golden Eagle Festival on Saturday. Both girls represented our school well and presented a great well-spoken speech. Also well done to our resident piper Ryan Wilson, who also did a fantastic job piping for all the festival goers.
Some of our Primary young people sang at the Moffat Golden Eagle Festival too. Well done to all, you were amazing!
