Hamilton Show Trip

During the holidays a group of Moffat Academy staff and students were 'In the room where it happened'. We had a fantastic trip to see the smash hit musical Hamilton at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh. The show was incredible from start to finish. After the show we were treated to a half hour technical demonstration showing off how the production was put together- lighting/ sound/ costume/ staging/ interviews with the cast and much more.

LGS and Community windpower at Moffat Academy

Here are some snapshots of today’s classes taking part in a tennis lesson thanks to Community Windpower.

Pupils from Moffat & Beattock Primary School were practicing their footwork through ladders and we spoke about why we need to move forwards/backwards and shuffle side to side (everyone’s favourite the ICKY SHUFFLE!!!!).

We then focused on our hand eye coordination with some challenges, which then was followed by overhead serves and then finished the session with some rallies!!!

We couldn’t be here without the support we get from Community Windpower and the participants are absolutely loving the sessions!

Coaches Liam and Mark did some team building games with the hoops, as well as practiced our hockey skills through passing, dribbling and some races too!

Tag Rugby

Scottish Rugby Schools week on Wednesday the P6 and P7 pupils participated in a Tag rugby festival held at Moffat Academy with over 70 Boys and Girls attending from Moffat Beattock Primary School and Nethermill Primary Parent Council & Fundraising.

Some Pre festival sessions had been held at the schools prior to work on skills and learning the game of Tag Rugby and a very much energetic day of Fun, Rugby and Mud was had by all. Big thanks to all the schools, teachers, young leaders and volunteers for their help and support

Thank you all so much for all of your book donations for our World Book Day Book Sale. We sold around 890 books with a fantastic total of £445.42! The funds will go to Secondary and Primary books plus a donation of £100 to the Canine Rescue Centre.

A massive well done to Konnie Watson P7 who raised an amazing £336.34 with a raffle for the D&G Canine Rescue Centre. Konnie volunteers at the centre and was very keen to raise some funds for their 21st Birthday Celebrations.

Together with Moffat Academy's donation from the book sale, the grand total for the Canine Rescue was £436.34. Thank you to Jon Foot from the Canine Rescue who came along to receive the cheque on Tuesday.

Pictured are Jon Foot (with Taz and Gizmo), Konnie Watson and two of our prefect team to hand over the cheque, Morgan Todd and Craig Bentley and the winners of Konnie's raffle.

First Minister Visit

The young people and staff at Moffat Academy were delighted to welcome the First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills this morning, for the official launch of the Gender Based Violence Prevention Framework.

We are committed to supporting all of our young people to feel safe, healthy and included, both in and out of school. Recognising that prevention is far better than reacting, we try to get on the front foot as much as possible through education and awareness. A key part of this support lies in our strong relationships across the school - we know our young people really well and listen carefully to their concerns around a range of related issues.

It was fantastic to be able to share first hand the work being done across our cluster with the First Minister and Cabinet Secretary. Our student focus group, supported by their teachers, presented and discussed projects this morning relating to Mentors in Violence Prevention, Equalities, Relationships and Sexual Health, Personal and Social Education, Boys Mentoring, Respect Me and Equally Safe in School to name just a few.

Moffat Academy is also fortunate to be collaborating with a range of amazing partners and we were delighted that Dumfries and Galloway Youth Work attended to support the young people they have been working with in our Wider Achievement Group.

Our young people were confident, articulate and engaging and we couldn't be more proud of them - fantastic role models and citizens of the future!

The Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships

On Sunday 10th March the SWSPDA (South West Scotland Piping and Drumming Academy) took a schools pipe band, made up from young people from across D&G , to compete in The Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships. This is a showcase of the talent of our young musicians across Scotland designed to promote the playing of our national instruments.  Competition grades and categories provide a forum for top level competition, in addition to a positive and encouraging environment for school pipe bands with minimal or no competing experience.

We were delighted that three of our young people from Moffat Academy formed part of the D&G pipeband. Ryan Wilson on pipes and Marcie Durston and Lochlan Graham on drums. They have shown great commitment and skill in their chosen instruments and are inspiring to other young people.

They competed in the Junior C section against another ten bands from places such as Harris and Lewis,  and were absolutely delighted to be presented with 2nd place.

They also picked up a further award, the Eilidh MacLeod Endeavour Award. This annual award is given to a band that demonstrates one or more of the following attributes: perseverance and resilience in the face of challenges; community contribution; enthusiasm and camaraderie; innovation; and/ or efforts to include everyone regardless of circumstances.

All the young people competing were great ambassadors for D&G and we were extremely proud to have three of Moffat Academy’s young people be part of it.

are so proud of what they have achieved and look forward to seeing them go from strength to strength under the guidance of the SWSPDA. Well done everyone!

World Book Day and Author Visits

Thank you to everyone who donated books, we were blown away with how many we received this year. Thank you also to all of our helpers, they worked so hard to get everything ready for the book sale. We also welcomed the fabulous authors Susi Briggs and Justin Davies to Moffat Academy and Beattock Primary during the week.

On Sunday 3rd March Moffat Academy took three teams to compete in the annual regional Gymnastics competition in Dumfries.  First up for Moffat were our two P1-P3 teams who had to compete on vault and floor.  The teams demonstrated great determination to train for this event by not only remembering their routines but also making them controlled and fluent.  For most of the team this was their first Gymnastics competition and the first time they have represented their school which added to the excitement of the day.

In the afternoon the secondary school team had their chance to perform in front of the large audience in the S1-S6 level 2 competition. They all performed their well rehearsed floor routines with great confidence and quality which was rewarded by the team achieving bronze medals.

Congratulations to all of the pupils who represented their school in an exceptional manner and were a credit to Moffat Academy.
