Sexual Health
Unplanned pregnancies are on the rise in Scotland. Sexual Health is working in collaboration with the School Nurses, Public Health, D&G Council's Education Department and Youth Work to address the poor uptake of contraception, especially amongst younger people. It's a national issue; NHS D&G's uptake figures are comparatively good, but still need to be higher in order to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.
Part of the problem is misinformation on social media, with unfounded negativity against hormonal contraception leading to more people using fertility tracking / natural family planning, which is ineffective. The danger to health from unwanted pregnancies [e.g. blood clots] far outweighs any that are posed by the side-effects of hormonal contraception.
Young women are urged to book appointments with Sexual Health D&G – or their GPs – to discuss which contraception method is right for them. Phone and in-person consultations are available.
