Human Rights Day 2024

Our Charities Committee recently organised a raffle to celebrate Human Rights Day. They raised £273 which will go to our school charity, War Child.

We must say a huge thank you to our local businesses in Moffat, Lockerbie and Dumfries who really went above and beyond to make our raffle prizes truly spectacular.

Some of our S1 pupils also created a fantastic Human Rights board display...

...And our very own Moffat Academy Pipe Band played some tunes at the front of the school.

Barney and some of the Rights Respecting Schools Steering Group from Primary and Secondary went out and about in Moffat to see some of the posters up that they delivered recently as part of Human Rights Day awareness. Thank you to all businesses who are displaying the posters in their windows.

Article 27 (adequate standard of living)

Every child has the right to a standard of living that is good enough to meet their physical and social needs and support their development.

 Litter Pick 19.12.24

Moffat academy's Rights Respecting Schools Steering Group have been busy organising a litter pick.  Volunteers from both the Primary and Secondary took part in a litter pick in the area around the school and Station Park. They also provided dispensers for dog poo bags to help everyone in the community keep Moffat clean. The litter pick and the provision of dog poo bag dispensers are not just about cleaning up the community, but also about empowering children to exercise their rights and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment.

Silver Status!

Moffat Academy 2-18 - Officially a Silver Rights Respecting School!

We are delighted to let you know that on the 30th May Moffat Academy was successful in achieving our Silver Rights Respecting School Award. Our assessor has advised that we are the first 2-18 all through Silver School in D&G!

Our assessor said that it is clear that all young people learn about their rights and that they are linked to lived experiences. It is evident that we are fully committed to rights as a leadership team. He could tell we were a great to school to be part of - and to work in, this coming from all the evidence presented and group discussions today.

We are absolutely delighted, and I would like to thank on behalf of the Senior Leadership Team the many, many hard working and committed staff and young people who have supported this journey and continue to make the cluster a great place to be a part of.

Please enjoy our RRSA video if you haven't already seen it:

UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)

Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other

cultures, and the environment.

Anti-Bullying Week

Last year as part of Anti-Bullying week we launched our awareness of the 'UN Convention on the Rights of the Child' campaign.

As well as analysing what they think we do well as a school, Moffat Academy's S6 Equalities Committee came up with some great suggestions to put into action. Well done to everyone involved.

Rights Respecting Schools Steering Group

Moffat Academy have achieved the first stage of the Rights Respecting Schools Award, Bronze: Rights Committed. In order to support the work moving forward we have established a Rights Respecting steering group which includes a variety of young people and staff. Pictures below are some of our members. Primary also have a steering group.

The role of the Steering Group is:

  • To take the lead in developing and delivering the school's plan to become rights respecting

  • To ensure that the whole school is aware of the RRSA

  • To provide a link between young people, teachers and the senior leadership team, parents and carers and the whole school community

  • To prepare for next stages of the RRSA, Silver: Rights Aware and Gold: Rights Respecting in the longer term.

The group will work with the whole school community to further the three RRSA Strands of the RRS:

  • Strand A: Teaching and learning about rights

  • Strand B: Teaching and learning through rights - ethos and relationships

  • Strand C: Teaching and learning for rights - participation, empowerment and action
